Athletes Turn To Physio Due To Compounding Injuries

Differences between an athletic therapy and physiotherapy

Physiotherapy and athletic therapy Toronto are very similar medical practice professions but with some distinct differences usually seen in the scope of treatment that these two professions can offer. The outcomes of the treatments given by either are the same and the techniques used during the treatment are usually just the same. What differs between the two is the training they have received and the scope of treatment allowed. The physiotherapist has a larger scope of treatment that they can offer. Here are some of the differences between the two.

Athletic therapist – an athletic therapist receives education and training as a bachelor’s degree covered in four years. The training done here focuses majorly on the musculoskeletal system and biomechanics. This means that an athletic therapist is more skewed to taking care of problems relating to the muscles, bones and joints. The study done again focuses on how the musculoskeletal system relates to physical activity. The therapist is put through how to respond to emergency situations, assessment, supportive care, equipment selection and fitting, preventive care and so much more. In order for an athletic therapist to be allowed to practice, they have to be certified. After the exams are passed then the therapist is allowed to call themselves a certified athletic therapist, CAT. An athletic therapist’s services are used in clinics, in teams, in colleges and universities , in sport organizations like the NBA, and by independent elite athletes.

Physiotherapist – a physiotherapist studies give their practice a wider scope than an athletic therapist. A physiotherapist works in conjunction with other medical personnel to ensure that overall health and fitness of the patient is maintained. They prevent disabilities, rehabilitate patients with injuries, and improve physical activity to reduce dependence, enhance physical performance and help patients recover from various conditions and injuries. A physiotherapist will usually further their education so that they can specialize in one of the many areas within their scope. The scope of the WCPT is in rehabilitation of patients in orthopaedics, burn patients, spinal cord injury, amputations, head injuries, neurological disorders, stroke rehabilitation, congenital disorders and cardio-respiratory rehabilitation. With all these areas a physiotherapist will work with the other medical profession treating the patient to ensure that the patient is able to achieve a wholesome recovery that sees them resume normal life activities quickly and easily. The services of physiotherapists are used in hospitals, private clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, in teams and sports organizations and in home care.

A physiotherapist can also specialize in sports therapy which is conducted under a sport physiotherapy organization in Canada.  A Physiotherapist therefore has a wide scope of practice while the athletic therapist does not. Also the physiotherapist will work in collaboration with other medical service personnel and the client in order to achieve certain goals.
